Robert L. Manuel Robert L. Manuel is an Associate Provost and Dean of the School of Continuing Studies at Georgetown University. He has gained international recognition during his 15-years in higher education for his development and implementation of novel academic programs, including graduate and online learning strategies at Georgetown and New York University (NYU). As the Dean of the School of Continuing Studies, Dr. Manuel oversees all of Georgetown’s professional, summer, and continuing education programs as well as the first doctoral degree program in Liberal Studies in the United States and Canada. He is a member of the Dean’s Council at Georgetown University and the University Campaign Council. He sits on the editorial advisory board for Continuing Higher Education Review and is a former University Continuing Education Association commissioner.
Dr. Richard H. Carmona From Canyon Ranch, we welcome Dr. Richard Carmona, the 17th Surgeon General of the United States(2002-2006). Dr. Carmona’s extensive experience in public health, clinical sciences, health care management, preparedness, and his commitment to prevention as an effective means to improve public health and reduce health care costs while improving the quality and quantity of life, led to his nomination in 2002 by the president to become the 17th Surgeon General of the United States. In 2006, after successfully completing the statutory four-year term of the U.S. Surgeon General, Dr. Carmona was named to the position of vice chairman for Canyon Ranch, the country’s leading health and wellness company for over 30 years.Dr. Carmona also serves as chief executive officer of the company’s Health division and oversees health strategy and policy for all Canyon Ranch businesses. He is president of the nonprofit Canyon Ranch Institute and the first Distinguished Professor of Public Health at the University of Arizona’s Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health. Dr. Carmona’s extraordinarily rich and varied resume includes combat-decorated Special Forces Vietnam veteran, one of the most highly decorated police officers in Arizona, and SWAT Team expert. As Surgeon General, Dr. Carmona focused on prevention, preparedness, health disparities, health literacy, and global health to include health diplomacy. He also issued many landmark Surgeon General communications during his tenure, including the definitive Surgeon General’s Report about the dangers of second-hand smoke.

Robert J. Hedaya, M.D., D.F.A.P.A., is a diversely trained and experienced psychiatrist who has been board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, the American Board of Adolescent Psychiatry, and certified as proficient in psychopharmacology by The American Society of Clinical Psychopharmacology. He has been recognized as a Master Clinician in functional medicine by the Institute for Functional Medicine. He trained under the auspices of some of the most renowned students of Goodwin, Beck, and Bowen, who are recognized leaders in today’s psychiatric community. Dr. Hedaya obtained both a B.A. in Psychology (1974) Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa, and his Medical Degree (1979) at the State University of New York at Buffalo.
In addition, national yoga expert Beryl Bender Birch will address the conference about her philosophy on the mind/body connection as an avid student of classical yoga and the study of consciousness. Her work merges the traditions of Classical Raja Yoga, Vedanta, Buddhism and Jainism. Beryl has been a teacher in the tradition of classical yoga for over 35-years and is the author of three best-selling books, Power Yoga, Beyond Power Yoga, and Boomer Yoga. Through her school The Hard & The Soft Yoga Institute, she has been training yoga students and teachers as “spiritual revolutionaries.” She is the founder of the Give Back Yoga Foundation.
Dr. Bernie Siegel Also featured in the conference will be Dr. Bernie Siegel, one of the founders of the patient empowerment movement and the choice to live fully and die in peace. As a physician who has cared for and counseled innumerable people whose mortality has been threatened by illness, Dr. Siegel embraces a philosophy of living and dying that stands at the forefront of the medical ethics and spiritual issues our society grapples with today. He continues to break new ground in the field of healing and personally struggling to live the message of kindness and love. His book, Love Medicine and Miracles has been the bible of the patient and caregiver healing movement for the past 30-years.
Doro Bush Koch teaches the importance of simple breath techniques and meditation for health purposes in the BB&R workshops. A lifetime student of spirituality, she believes that in this culture of doing, nourishing ourselves spiritually and mentally plays a major role in achieving optimal health. Doro has adopted and shares the philosophy that not only must we “work out” to keep our bodies healthy, but that it is equally as important to “work in.”
Tricia Reilly has studied alternative approaches to health and wellness for more than 20-years. Tricia believes finding and embracing mind-body balance is what keeps us healthy in today’s hectic and stressful world. Tricia is the lead seminar presenter and is a graduate of the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. She is a Board Certified Holistic Health Counselor through the American Association of Drugless Practitioners (AADP). She is also President of PRFC, Inc., a company that for twenty years has specialized in the design and operation of restaurant concepts, most recently, SO FRESH! which will bring authentically healthy foods to the airport environment.
Therese Burch is committed to the concept of bringing mind and body together in harmony to achieve greater health and a longer life. With more than 25-years of experience in high-level management positions in both public and private sector, she uses her skills to help communicate the BB&R Consulting message to the wider public. Ms. Burch served as Special Assistant to the President for Operations and Advance at the White House during both terms of President George W. Bush. Her ability to reach people and “get the job done” has made her a warrior for healthy living.
