As health coaches, we get a lot of questions about what to eat and what not to eat. One common question is about calories. How many of us still count our calories on a daily basis? We at BB&R are skeptical about calorie counting because there is no good way to count them unless you are a scientist! We can attempt to keep a rough count of the total number of calories we consume each day, but you have to be very honest and methodical about the counting. A lot of people take on this job, and it becomes another source of stress in their lives. Additionally, calories are not all the same. The calories from an apple are not the same as the calories from a doughnut or candy bar, and they do not do the same thing in the body either. Whereas the apple will sustain and nourish you, contributing to overall health, the doughnut will detract from your health and will break your body down during digestion. So, if we can stay away from processed foods as much as possible, counting calories becomes obsolete, and you can “free” yourself from being concerned about “how many calories” you just ate!
